It’s time that marijuana be decriminalized at the federal level. For far too long it has been used to criminalize members of poor communities and create racial inequality. It’s time that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris decriminalize this substance and stay true to a campaign promise. Millions of Americans have been and will continue to be negatively affected by the federal prohibition on marijuana. Along with decriminalizing the substance the hundreds of thousands of people imprisoned for non-violent drug offenses should have their records wiped clean. Legislation like the 94 crime bill escalated these racial inequalities with the war on drugs and further proves the point that it’s time for a change.
