The NYPA has started drilling core samples to determine the structure of the Dam at The Oxbow yesterday. They will be installing 200' linear feet of sheet metal panels by pile driving them to a depth of 40 feet. The drilling crew were hoping to hit bedrock, but at 55 feet the were still in what they called 'till', a mixture of sand and gravel, so stopped. So, for a depth of 55 feet we know the embankment is made of sand, soil and gravel, which in the event of a breach, could wash away very easily. Installing the sheet metal pilings, will ensure the water seeping into the embankment from the canal will flow down the panels and under them, so all the soil on the other side will remain dry and stable.
