Hi Folks! These trees live for one more day at least!!! We were able to stop the crew hired by Renaissance, to cut down the one large Douglas Fir tree in the front, without receiving their final preservation inspection permit! The crew on the ground didn’t know that. So, we stopped them from cutting this incredible tree down today after contacting the Urban Forestry Department. The tree cutters have left for the day. We protected this tree, all these trees, for one more day. Our city laws need to change. This has shined a bright light on the fact that our city allows for clear cutting of our most majestic large trees even though large trees, like Multnomah Village’s Mother Tree, are the real superheroes in fighting climate change, cooling our homes as much as 10 degrees. As Portland trends towards more extreme summer heat waves, worsening air quality, reduced wildlife habitat, and other extreme weather events, the large trees we cut down today will determine the temperatures of our neighborhoods, sidewalks, and streets in the years ahead.  Please stay tuned. We may have an urgent event on public property, to be there to witness and honor and love these trees before or as they are being torn down. And if you want to be a tree sitter feel free to come do that!
