My name is Yahkhahnahn “Yah” Ammi, a community leader, and I am a victim of false accusations that have shattered my life. Despite overwhelming evidence of my innocence and no criminal conviction, I have lost custody of my children, endured relentless legal battles, and faced unwarranted public scrutiny.
My story is not unique. Countless others, such as Brian Banks, the Central Park Five, and Gerardo Cabanillas, have suffered similar injustices. The difference? I have not been convicted, yet I am still fighting for my freedom and dignity.
Our Demands
We call on Congress to implement the following legislative changes:
Presumption of Innocence: Reinforce the fundamental principle that individuals are innocent until proven guilty.
Protection of Reputation: Establish legal recourse for those whose reputations have been unjustly damaged by false accusations.
Custody Rights: Ensure that custody decisions are based on evidence and the best interests of children, not unfounded allegations.
Legal Protections: Provide access to legal aid and resources for individuals defending themselves against false claims.
Accountability for False Accusers: Impose legal consequences on those who make malicious and knowingly false accusations.
