Join Portway Schools' parents: Demand school crossing lollipop patrols now
The Issue
As a parent of a reception child at Portway Infants, I have witnessed numerous dangerous situations on the busy road crossings near Portway Infants School and Portway Junior School. It's heart-wrenching to see children and their families navigate these treacherous crossings, dodging vehicles that often show little regard for pedestrian safety. It is only a matter of time before an unfortunate accident occurs, and we must act decisively to prevent it.
The crossings near these schools are bustling, with a high volume of traffic, particularly during the morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up times. The absence of a structured system to aid children and families across the road safely makes it a predicament waiting to happen. The addition of up to three lollipop ladies or gents would not only ensure the safety of our children but also bring peace of mind to all parents and carers in the area. Lollipop patrols are a trusted presence, known to efficiently manage road crossings and protect young lives.
According to data from the UK Department for Transport, pedestrian safety measures, including the presence of school crossing patrols, significantly reduce the risk of road accidents involving children. Schools with dedicated crossing personnel have lower incidents of road traffic accidents, demonstrating the vital role they play. Furthermore, a recent study revealed that schools with active crossing guides witnessed a notable enhancement in community confidence concerning road safety around school zones.
We call upon Derby City Council to prioritise the safety of our children by appointing up to three lollipop ladies or gents at the crucial Blenheim Drive crossing near Portway Infants School and Portway Junior School. This practical, immediate measure will significantly mitigate the risks currently faced by our community's young people.
We urge all parents, carers, and community members in Allestree to join us in making this happen by signing this petition. Let us come together to protect our children and ensure their safe journey to and from school every day.
