The Issue

As a parent, I have witnessed firsthand the incredible benefits that the Pre-K programs offer to our children. Every day, our dedicated teachers devote themselves tirelessly to ensuring our kids receive the best education possible. These programs are not just educational; they are pillars of support for countless families, particularly for single mothers who struggle with the high costs of childcare due to insufficiently paying jobs. The Pre-K programs provide them with an invaluable opportunity to work and support their families without the added stress of finding affordable childcare.

Moreover, our teachers go above and beyond, often spending from their own pockets to aid our children’s learning and ensure they are well-prepared for the future. The devoted educators we have been so fortunate to have are a blessing, and their commitment to our children's success cannot be understated.

The proposed sugar tax, while perhaps well-intentioned, diverts necessary funding from these essential Pre-K programs. This reallocation could jeopardize one of the few remaining support systems families rely on. We urge policymakers to reconsider their approach and prioritize the continuation of Pre-K funding over implementing a sugar tax.

Our children’s futures depend heavily on the education and support these programs provide. Let’s ensure that the dedicated efforts of our educators and the bright futures of our children are not compromised by the sugar tax.

“Join me in calling on our government to continue the sugar tax and continue the necessary funding for Philly’s Pre-K programs.”
