Protect the Habitats of the CRITICALLY ENDANGERED Orange Bellied Parrots
0 have signed. Let’s get to 5,000!
This colorful orange bellied parrot is one of less than 50 left in the wild. They are CRITICALLY ENDANGERED, yep CRITICALLY ENDANGERED. That means they are at a high risk of being extinct. Yet another animal that we as a society have let go extinct. With the help of you and others simply signing this petition we get one step closer to saving this species.
The Orange Bellied Parrot is a species of bird found in Australia, more specifically Tasmania and along the South East coast of Australia. Currently there are roughly 50 left in the wild. The main reasons for this are Cats and Foxes hunting them, habitat loss/modification, noxious weed, competition eating their food and inbreeding due to low population. If we don't take a stand now the Orange Bellied Parrot is going to be yet another extinct species that our children and grandchildren will only ever see in pictures.
The possible solutions:
- Protecting the known habitats of the parrots.
- Breed them in captivity to later release them into the wild (already being done)
- Monitoring them to prevent hunting
How can you help?
- Of course, signing this petition to ensure that the habitat of the Orange Bellied Parrot is protected.
- Enforcing a curfew on your cat to prevent them from hunting
Appearance: The orange bellied parrot obviously gets it name due to its orange belly. The males and females slightly differ in appearance. The males have a bright green head, back and the certain tips of their wings. Males have a bright blue patch on their head and the very ends of their wings. Females have a much smaller patch of orange on their belly and a darker blue on their head and wings.
Habitat: Orange bellied parrots are found on the south coast of Australia and in Tasmania depending on the time of year. They breed in Tasmania in the summer and migrate to the southern coast of Australia in the winter. When looking for a nest they tend to go into a hollowed out trees and logs.
