Stop the fence that will ruin Yeo Park/Gough Reserve

The issue

The Department of Education is planning to fence off the cricket oval that lies between Yeo Park Infants School and Outfield Cafe, Ashfield.

My family and I have been loving this park and the way the local community has been coming together there, particularly throughout this year. Public spaces like this are limited in our area and clearly encourage community connections, health and wellbeing. To put up a hideous metal school fence around this public space would be an appalling decision. Yet, without any public consultation, surveyors laid out markers last week. It appears to be going ahead and they have ignored feedback from the local council, so I think it's time local residents stood up for their park.

Any fence will greatly limit the use of the park to all residents who have been enjoying the area in great numbers, especially since the opening of the cafe at the top of the park.

Inner West Council is opposed to this move and they have proposed a compromise, but the Department of Education has rejected a request to meet the council officials on the site to discuss these proposals. The council is eager to find a way to keep the space open so both the community and the school can continue enjoying this park.

Please share this with your neighbours to help save Yeo Park cricket oval for the entire community.

Hello, Thank you for signing this petition and contacting me about the proposed fence at Yeo Park Infants School. I’ve been working with the Department of Education and Inner West Council to find a solution and am thrilled that following your emails and calls, the Department has announced it is going back to the drawing board and THERE WILL BE NO CHANGES to the community’s use of Gough Reserve, including weekend cricket. Yeo Park Infants’ is a unique and wonderful school and contributes so much to our local community. Inner west council has been working with the school and with local community and sporting groups to activate Gough Reserve. I’ve been thrilled to see this little corner of the inner west filled with picnickers, junior cricket games and families resting in the shade of the Reserve’s beautiful trees. Thanks to you, that will continue. I’d like to extend my sincere thanks to the Minister for Education and Early Learning, the Hon. Sarah Mitchell, who listened to the community’s concerns. Thank you also everyone in the Yeo Park Infants’ community, Clr Mark Drury, Inner West Council staff, Mayor Darcy Byrne and to the many residents and parents who have contacted me. And most of all, thank YOU for taking the time to speak up and advocate for our precious public space! All the best, Jo
