Yesterday was a big day for our campaign – and it would never have happened without you. In the morning, we heard from the U.S. Court of Appeals that they were denying the injunction our tribe had filed against pipeline construction – terrible news.
But moments afterward in an unexpected turn of events, the Department of the Interior, Department of Justice and the Department of the Army issued a joint statement saying that they would pause construction until they can decide whether they need to reconsider past decisions that have been made regarding the project. In addition, they are asking for tribal consultation in re-evaluating how huge projects get fast-tracked the way the Dakota Access was, and deciding whether new legislation should be introduced to ensure that tribes are included in these decision-making processes moving forward.
In other words: the U.S. government has acknowledged that the manner in which this pipeline was approved was questionable, and should be looked into, and that tribes should be better included in the future.
This is HUGE! We are thrilled, and know that this would never have happened without the support of our allies from across the country and around the world. Know that every call you made to the Army Corps, every tweet you sent to President Obama, every dollar you donated to help us deliver signatures in D.C. went towards this day. Thank you. You can watch us react to the news here: http://bit.ly/2cAGh5C.
We also want to be clear that this is only a pause. The battle is not won. We may have a long road ahead of us yet, but we couldn’t be more grateful to have you all alongside us as we keep fighting.
