HAZARD PAY FOR MILDRED MITCHELL BATEMAN HOSPITAL EMPLOYEES

The Issue

Our staff at Mildred Mitchell Bateman Psychiatric Hospital are risking our lives and the lives of our families everyday we come into work. We work with CoVid positive patients who are mentally ill. Patients that spit in our faces and rip off our masks. Patients who are scared of us because we are in suits and they can't see our entire faces. Patients whose care involves communicating face to face for lengthy periods of time because they need someone to listen unhurriedly and free of judgement. Patients who we must reorient to reality. Patients who we are asking to trust us and not the auditory or visual hallucinations they may be experiencing. Patients, who in crisis, lash out violently. We are committed to our patients. We care for them. We take our oath as nurses and care providers seriously. We will continue to show up and fulfill our duty to our patients. We feel like we should not be taken advantage of for being honorable and with integrity. All we ask is that we are compensated fairly considering the hazardous working conditions we are under with the added strain of CoVid-19. We asked for support for this petition as we support the state of WV's most forgotten sons and daughters.
