Joe Manchin, born in 1947, is an American politician and businessman known for his extensive career in public service. He currently serves as the senior United States Senator from West Virginia, a position he has held since 2010. Before his tenure in the Senate, Manchin was the 34th Governor of West Virginia from 2005 to 2010 and served as the 27th Secretary of State of West Virginia from 2001 to 2005. His political journey began in the West Virginia House of Delegates from 1982 to 1986, followed by a decade in the State Senate. Manchin was also the president of Enersystems, a coal brokerage company founded by his family. Initially a Democrat, Manchin registered as an independent in 2024.
