CHOICE is the latest to protest against consumers being the target of Australia's great surcharge rip-off that is being ignored by Joe Hockey: https://www.choice.com.au/money/credit-cards-and-loans/credit-cards/articles/airlines-still-overcharging-on-credit-cards-030715
CHOICE estimates that international and domestic airlines take close to $900,000 a day in total surcharges. That’s $900,000 made through customers that purchase through an online check-out using their credit card.
Whilst some businesses accept the cost of offering credit card facilities to customers as a cost of doing business, many others are still passing these fees onto customers in the form of surcharges and at whatever percentage takes their fancy!
If businesses don't want to include the costs of offering credit card facilities into their pricing (like they do every other cost of doing business), then they can choose not to offer this payment option to customers. However, given most businesses accept credit cards it would appear they see a benefit to doing so. These benefits are often ignored, as are the costs of cash transactions.
THE RBA is considering expanding regulation on surcharges, which could enable all businesses to apply a credit card surcharge on every purchase we make. Granted, some of the options include capping the surcharge that businesses pass on to consumers, but why should consumers pay for something that has a business benefit and which does not exist almost anywhere else in the world?
If businesses don't want to build into their pricing the costs of offering credit card payments, then don't offer the facilities. Regulation is unnecessary and offers no additional benefit. The “published price” for a product or service is the price you should be paying. Otherwise, in my view, the advertised price is simply misleading the consumer!
Finally, given the volume of people that want surcharges banned, I'm shocked the RBA is still considering expanding regulation and that Joe Hockey has not intervened to represent the views of almost 200,000 Australians that have signed my petitions on this subject. This number continues to grow every day - what will it take Mr Hockey?
fighting on,
Klaus
