Orange County Animal Shelter is a disgusting place and needs to be updated immediately!
The Issue
I need your help!
Orange County Animal Services (OCAS) is a disgusting place and needs to be updated immediately!
We need to be the voice for our four-legged friends.
OCAS should be a NO-KILL shelter with a state-of-the-art facility.
Please sign the Petition and reach out to your Orange County Commissioner, your House of Representatives, and Jerry Demings, Mayor of Orange County to get the animals immediate help.
The animals are living in squalor conditions that reflect back to "Dog Pound' visuals of cages filled with dogs and cats. The environment is brutal. OCAS has no air conditioning in the dog kennels. The weather will be in the 90's or higher for the foreseeable future. The temperature in the kennels can reach 100 degrees or more. The dogs are terrified. Even if a kennel card states “Dog must be alone! Does not like other dogs!” the dog is housed with other dogs.
OCAS is at capacity. The building is old. The existing facility was built in 1987 and was never intended to be an adoption center, just a holding facility. It is outdated and overcrowded.
OCAS does not have a full-time behaviorist or trainer to work with the animals. There no full-time employees to exercise the dogs, play with and enrich other animals, or teach volunteers how to work with abused and frightened animals.
OCAS does not have a full service veterinary facility to care for emergencies. This leads to many animals being euthanized simply because OCAS does not have the capability to care for the medical emergency, unless a rescue partner will step up and take them.
Funding of $34 million was allocated in the 2017 Orange County budget. Yet plans have been halted indefinitely due to COVID. The state of emergency for Orange County was officially declared over by Mayor Demings during his State of the County presentation. The animals need help immediately. We need to be their voice.
Again, please sign the petition and reach out to your Orange County Commissioner, your House of Representatives, and Jerry Demings, Mayor of Orange County. OCAS needs a new climate-controlled shelter with a state-of-the-art clinic staffed with a full-time veterinarian to care for emergencies, and a behavioral specialist to work with the animals.
Process changes are needed.
OCAS leadership must embrace moving towards a No-Kill shelter and not use Euthanasia as a policy protocol. Such policies are regressive and archaic. There should no longer be a weekly Last Chance List. The animals on this list have less than a week to be rescued or adopted, or they will be euthanized. Volunteers, rescue partners, and animal advocates constantly work diligently trying to save these animals. This time could be better spent by visiting and spending time with the animals, networking them, putting together fundraiser, and educating the public about shelter animals.
Please also consider giving an animal a furever home:
Here is the OCAS website with available animals.
FYI - the picture of the dog in the petition is Ziggy
Ziggy - #A430704 is a little sad and we can't blame her. She has been surrendered to the shelter three times over the past few years. She was originally discarded after having puppies. Another time she was surrendered because her owner was having a baby. This last time was due to her owner no longer being able to care for her. As you can see, she has been failed numerous times. Animals like Ziggie are who we are speaking up for. If you can give Ziggy a furever home click the link below
