So, I went on holiday for a few days and when I got back there were an extra 26 thousand of you! 45,577 in total right now. Thank you so much - I may not be able read all the comments but I (and the whole Register for Ruby campaign including, of course, Ruby herself and her family) appreciate it so much. Again, I'm deeply touched by comments highlighting how many people's lives have been touched by blood cancer and other blood disorders. Some sad stories but also really hopeful ones about families and friends saved by stem cell transplants (through cord blood in at least one case). A brief update on Ruby... she's going back and forth to hospital for a third round of chemotherapy. The last one went really well but she still needs to keep going - despite the laundry-list of side effects which includes horrible nausea. It's obviously hard for her, Sam and the children. She is still hopeful though and still looking for that elusive donor. We have an exciting opportunity to run a donor drive (for people to sign up to the register as potential adult stem cell donors) at the Saracens' Rugby match on Mothering Sunday. If you are attending the game, pop along and see us (no need to e-mail in advance)! The process takes 5 minutes - fill in a form, swab two cheeks for 60 seconds each (before you've had that pre-match pint) and sit back and wait to potentially save a life. If you are between 17-55 and in relatively good health (we can discuss any concerns you have) then we'd love to see you there! Or follow us on Facebook for details of new events (Register for Ruby). But it's also really easy to sign up online too at www.dkms.org.uk. In the comments, someone mentioned reaching out to Ruby's ethnic community (which is a mixture of Latin American and Spanish). I'm really pleased to say that Register for Ruby has had so much support from the Latin American community here in the U.K. We're run donor drives at Spanish speaking churches around London, been featured on Juntos TV, in the Latino Life Newsletter and so many other opportunities. There are also drives happening in Australia and America. But we're always open to new contacts and ideas! You can get in touch through the Facebook page or registerforruby@gmail.com. We're looking for that one in a million here! Remember though, even if you aren't Latin American, there are lots of people out there who are searching for a donor and it's so important that everyone who can signs up! It's also a strange fact that few of us know our genetic heritage precisely and unexpected matches do come up! So it's vital that people register and share to save not just Ruby but many others to come. That's one reason why cord blood donation is such an amazing opportunity. At the moment, only around half of the people searching for a stem cell or bone marrow donor find the match they need. The odds are much lower for anyone who isn't of White Northern European heritage and it's really difficult where there is a mixed background. With a bank of frozen cord blood donations of an appropriate size, not only do Anthony Nolan predict we'd be able to meet 80% of need but the donations would be there and waiting - enabling people to get quicker treatment. Another benefit is that donors and recipients don’t need to be an exact match, as the stem cells in cord blood aren’t so mature and can develop to suit their recipient. That means it’s easier to find matches. Of course, some people will opt for delayed clamping (a perfectly valid choice) or the cord blood won't be suitable for donation (in which case it can be used for research to improve future treatments). However, at the moment, even women giving birth in an area where they could have the opportunity to donate aren't given the information to make that choice. So much cord blood is simply wasted. That's why I'm so pleased that so many of you have chosen to ask our government to increase availability and information around this crucial service! A final note to just let you know that we are nearing the final few days of Ruby's Just Giving campaign - to raise funds to support Ruby and her family through this difficult time but also to help us raise awareness. Even to print out 100 flyers for a single event can cost £60 and more substantial publicity is difficult (although people have been hugely generous with time and resources). If everyone here donated just 25p then the target would be smashed! You can find details here: https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/team-ruby Thank you so much for your thoughts and support.
