Tory environment secretary Michael Gove came to look at the Sheffield trees this week. In a recent letter to SCC, Gove claimed that he was only recently made aware of the tree felling crisis; he must have been very busy voting for other environmentally destructive policies of his own government to bother too much about Sheffield. See article at http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/michael-gove-calls-for-end-to-bonkers-sheffield-tree-felling-plan-during-visit-to-city-1-8776374 . Whilst his intervention gives the campaign publicity, we wonder whether he'd be so eager to protect these trees if they were in the way of the South Yorkshire leg of HS2, on a fracking site or on land on which a Tory donor wanted to build affordably unaffordable houses. Gove's voting record on environmental issues and the austerity punishment that is causing misery to hundreds of thousands of people in Sheffield speaks for itself.
