Island Beach State Park Recreation Zone Development Proposal

The Issue

The New Jersey Windsurfing & Watersports Association requests that Island Beach State Park establish non-motorized watersports launchsites on the bay within the IBSP Recreation Zone.

There are approximately 20 parking lots and trails leading to ocean beaches in the park, but not 1 bayside access trail for recreational activities. The shallow water of Barnegat Bay, known as the Flats, has long been a draw for watersports enthusiasts. Providing public access to Barnegat Bay will maximize the recreational value of the park, while helping to maintain an eroding shoreline. Any new launchsite into Barnegat Bay would compliment the limited access at the developing IBSP Marina site.

The New Jersey Windsurfing & Watersports Association also requests Island Beach State Park to remove the words “wind sail, and windsurf”, from State Park Service Code N.J.A.C. 7:2-5.5(b) prohibiting windsurfing in the waters of the Sedge Islands Conservation Zone, and specifically, at the A-15 canoe & kayak launch. We find that windsurfing is a traditional recreational boating activity in Barnegat Bay, and should have the same navigational rights as boats do in this zone. Therefore, we would like A-15 designated as a non-motorized watersports launchsite.

The New Jersey Windsurfing & Watersports Association also requests Island Beach State Park to rescind the ban on car pulled trailers at the IBSP Marina and South Seaside Park properties, and to make allowances for trailers within Island Beach State Park.
