We have gotten some news from Jen Clayton at Island Beach State Park. They are looking at creating a trail to the bay in the recreation zone, and potentially allowing windsurfing and kiteboarding access within the park. The preferred option is to build a trail that cars can fit down, to be able to drop off equipment, and then park at lot A-10. These 15 parking spaces would be supplemented with 14 spaces at lot A-9. An alternate option was to create a footpath from lot A-13. This would have meant wheeling your equipment 800’ to the water. This larger lot would have been able to accommodate trailers. The park is able to host the Student Conservation Corps to get much of the work done. There are still a lot of administrative hurdles to get over, so keep your fingers crossed. This is great news for a majority of the watersports enthusiasts who are willing to pay the state park entry fees for access to The Flats of Barnegat Bay. This area is 5 miles south of the marina, and offers pristine, never sailed on waters. The success of A-10 can determine if additional trails will be developed in the future.
