I have gotten a reply from Park Manager Jen Clayton. While we haven't achieved any more launchsites within the State Park, they have been working with us to improve the current situation at the Marina. I can concede that the ban on trailers is not discriminating towards windsurfers, as trailers in general are not permitted. This subject seems trivial in light of future growth predicted at the Marina. We can bring this up at another time if needed. Its been great at The Flats lately, with expanded parking spaces, no hassles with the one small section of on-street parking for trailers, and the split-rail fence corral has been removed. Most boarders are utilizing their own moorings to store their gear in the water. Transporting equipment and bodies over the split-rail fence for trailer-owners can be tough, but we have been able to move the top rail at times, allowing for easier access. Police have been very friendly towards us. This is good for now, but I worry about what is 5 years down the road. I plan to continue a dialog with Jen Clayton. The easiest solution in my eyes would be to re-purpose the maintenance storage yard (bayside) directly across from the Main Office between beaches 1 & 2. I still think we should have access at A-15 as well, as windsurfing would not cause damage to the (eroding?) area. I will continue to pursue this, as well as the possibility of developing a launchsite within Island Beach State Park designated Recreation Zone. The comments included in this petition have been an excellent barometer showing the interest in windsurfing and kiting at The Flats. I appreciate all of your support. This is a tremendous victory for The Flats, but still a battle for additional access within Island Beach State Park. With any luck, the Marina will continue to be a mixed use facility, and we won't be squeezed out. Please support the New Jersey Windsurfing & Watersports Association. www.windsurfnj.org
