For Jefferson County Sheriff to remove Scanner Encryption from Radio

The Issue

It is against our 1st Amendment right to put Encryption technology on Police Radio Scanners and under the Freedom of Information Act all Police departments need to provide the public the right to request access to information about our communities and towns we live in.

The Douglas County Sheriff department, the Arapahoe Sheriff's Office , the Colorado state patrol, the Denver Fire Department & South metro & West metro districts in Denver have all encrypted Scanners currently.

All Communities deserve access to real time police scanners but in the Mountain towns we depend on scanner traffic as a first alert in case of wildfires or dangerous animals or people in the area. We can still hear dispatch and area fire departments but in order to preserve transparency for Jeffco Sheriff's Department we need them to turn the scanners back on. The Jefferson County Sheriff now hide their radio traffic from the public with Encryption as of 12.30.2019

There is currently no data or proof that Encryption of police scanners make them safer. The Police work for the public to ensure our safety, so in order to keep that code we would like to regain access to encrypted stations so our mountain communities can stay informed and aware.
