Puyallup Water Warriors & Redefine Tacoma
Feb 25, 2018
Puget Sound Energy’s proposed LNG refinery in Tacoma will require a steady flow of natural gas, a fossil fuel which is extracted through a dangerous and harmful process called hydraulic fracking. Fracking involves injecting water, sand, and chemicals into the earth at high pressure, fracturing the rock and giving the process its name. This causes gas to flow out of the well. The above graphic shows just part of a fracking field with multiple fracking wells. According to the US Energy Information Administration, nearly 70% of today’s natural gas comes from fracking. There is nothing “natural” about it. Fracking uses enormous quantities of water, requiring 2 to 16 million gallons of water to frack one well. Fracking can leave tens of thousands of gallons of chemical fluid in the ground, threatening our water sources with toxins. This directly impacts the health of those living near fracking wells. Recent studies show increases in respiratory problems, premature births, pregnancy complications, and low birth weights in communities where fracking fields have been sited. You can read additional critical health, environmental impact information and fracking graphics at this link: http://bit.ly/2CeQ8OE You can read more about how fracking is connected to this project through Tarika Powell’s work at Sightline: http://bit.ly/2zY7z0w. We cannot allow Puget Sound Energy to put our community at risk, nor will we tolerate risking the health of people living near the fracking wells. Our communities are connected! Share this link if you agree – Puget Sound Energy’s fracked gas refinery must be stopped. http://bit.ly/2F6AUfA
