Som els Blaus de Granollers, Catalunya. Com deus saber aquesta és una terra de grans menjars, beures i sobretaules, taules de caràcter mediterrani on compartim tot durant els àpats: un bon pa de pagès, el setrill al mig, el tomàquet per sucar-hi el pa, un morter amb allioli, romesco i un bon porró.

El porró és un símbol de la nostra terra. Es tracta d'un recipient de vidre destinat a servir líquid, vi en moltes ocasions. És un estri d'origen medieval amb centenars d'anys d'història al damunt, se'n data una primera referència al segle XV! 

El porró es caracteritza per tenir dos brocs: un de vertical i ample, i un lleugerament inclincat i forma cònica. Pel primer s'omple i es neteja, i pel segon s'hi beu. Està dissenyat per obtenir un raig prim i beure a galet. T'adjuntem una imatge perquè ho puguis veure. O, encara millor, una emoticona!

Però el porró és molt més que un recipient o un element qualsevol de la cuina: té una dimensió social i cultural. És un símbol local i, alhora, universal:

• Té a veure amb el fer comunitat, amb enfortir els llaços al voltant d’una taula.
• Potencia els vincles col·lectius, ens fa sentir part d’un nosaltres.
• És un element de cohesió popular, una forma d’entendre la vida compartint. Té un caràcter popular, de carrer.
• Contribueix a crear un espai on tots som iguals (aquest passar-se el porró se mà en mà sense discriminacions), un espai de relacions horitzontals.
• Dóna forma a una identitat col·lectiva, és un símbol per sentir-se part d’un lloc, d'un nosaltres, en comú.
• A més, a catalans i catalanes, ens recorda les nostres arrels (i ja saps que qui perd les arrels, perd la identitat!)

Si bé el porró és una manifestació cultural originalment catalana, el seu significat és universal. De fet, és un estri tan especial que milions de turistes proven de fer-lo servir sense tacar-se, i es que és un art el beure i no regalimar. El porró converteix una simple funció biològica, la d'alimentar-nos, en un fenomen social. 

El porró representa gairebé totes les bondats del fet festiu (un fenomen humà excepcional!) i ens recorda les coses importants de la vida... que són les mateixes a tot el món!

Per això reivindiquem el porró, el volem recuperar i posar-lo en valor, i per estalviar-nos totes aquestes paraules... si el porró ja ho simbolitza, perquè no ho convertim en una emoticona del whatsapp? És un símbol cridat a representar el més essencial de la societat... i a WhatsApp no existeix un emoji per això!! Com és possible?

A més, Jan, entre nosaltres, no pot ser que un recipient per gelats, una gerra d’estil vintage i una copa amb una beguda desconeguda tinguin el seu emoji i el porró no. 

Ara ens han fet adonar que la petició ha d'anar dirigida també al consorci d'Unicode. No és per pressionar-vos, però penseu que som milers de persones esperant el vostre vistiplau. Així que esperem que pogueu autoritzar el porró com a símbol social i cultural d'aquesta forma de viure en comú.

 

ENGLISH VERSION

Dear Jan,

We are els Blaus, a cultural association based in Granollers (Barcelona), Catalunya. As you must know, this is a land of great food, drinks and table talks, tables with Mediterranean character, where we share everything during the meals: Some tasty Catalan bread, the oil bottle in the middle of the table, a tomato to smear on the bread, garlic and oil dressing, and a good porró.

Porró is a symbol of our land, it is a utensil made of glass, where we serve liquids in, most of the times wine. We are talking about a medieval tool, with a long history. They found references that this tool dates back to the 15th century!

Porró has two spouts: one of them is vertical and wide, and the other one is inclined and it has a conical shape. The first spout is used to fill and clean it. From the second inclined spout you drink. It is designed to get a thin runlet and to pour the liquid into your mouth. We added a picture so you can see how it works. Or, even better, an emoticon!

But porró is much more than a kitchen tool: it has a cultural and social meaning. It is a local, and at the same time, a universal symbol:

• It helps to create community, to strengthen the bonds during the meals.
• It boosts or stimulates the collective links that makes us to feel complete.
• It is a cohesive item, a way to understand a life of sharing. It has a popular character from the street.
• It helps to create an environment where everybody is the same (pass the porró from hand to hand without discriminations), an environment of horizontal relationships.
• It makes you feel part of a team.
• Besides, for Catalan people, it helps us to remember our roots (and you already know that who loses his or her roots, loses their identity).

Even though porró has Catalan cultural origins, its meaning is universal. In fact, it is that special that millions of tourists try to use it without spilling it. Because it is such an art to drink it and not to spill it. Porró evolved from a simple functional meaning into a social phenomenon.

Porró represents almost all the goodness from a festivity (a human exceptional phenomenon!). And it reminds us of all the good things in life… which are the same all over the world! This is why we claim porró. We want to take it back and give value to it.

And to avoid all these words… if porró symbolizes it, why don’t we convert it to a WhatsApp emoticon? It is a symbol made to represent the most essential thing in the society… and it doesn´t even exist as a Whatsapp emoticon!! How is this possible?

Moreover, Jan, between us, it is not possible that an ice cream biscuit, a vintage jar and a glass with an unknown drink have their own emoticons and porró has not.

We just realized that our petition also needs to be adressed to Unicode Consortium. It is not to put pressure on you but think that we are thousands of people waiting for your approval. Therefore, we hope you will authorize porró as a social and cultural symbol, like a way to live in communion.
