Calling on all Canberran's (and Canberra patriots) to help us bring Jamie Oliver's Ministry of Food to Canberra!!

For the past 2 years Belconnen Fresh Food Markets have been pushing to open a Jamie Oliver Ministry of Food Cooking School at the markets.
Our values and location align seamlessly with the Ministry of Food philosophy. We want to be able to provide a program for our community that teaches basic cooking skills and good nutrition to anyone and everyone who wants to learn to cook. Our advantage being located at a fresh food market offers us the opportunity to provide an engaging experience for our participants allowing them to understand and visualise beautiful fresh produce first hand, then take it back into the kitchen and learn to cook.
The Belconnen area houses some of Canberra's lowest socio-economic suburbs in the ACT region. Current research at Deakin University (Preventative Health Taskforce) has suggested that adults from lower socio-economic groups not only have lower levels of physical activity and healthy eating than those from more advantaged backgrounds, but that the real problem becomes apparent for adolescents leaving school. This has become a key point to target for us through a variety of programs we enforce at the Belconnen Markets, most notably Teen Chefs.
A Jamie Oliver Ministry of Food Cooking School would provide an opening to give Canberran's an opportunity to learn new skills to improve the quality of their own lives as well as their families, by reducing the risk of obesity and overweight which will assist in lowering further chronic diseases.
