Iowa State Football stadium entrance song
The Issue
The Iowa State University football program has been preaching about a "change of culture" within the program since the end of the 2014 season. That has been made evident by the win over UNI and the new and improved SEZ at Jack Trice Stadium. The revitalized Cyclones and the reenergized fans created an incredible atmosphere before kickoff against UNI of September 5th. The students were jumping around and the fans were screaming when the Cyclone Warning went off. Then, all of the energy in the stadium left once "Smoke on the Water" started playing. Released by Deep Purple in 1972 (43 years ago), Smoke on the Water's unnatural rhythm and lack of connection to anyone born after 1955 sucks every ounce of enthusiasm out of the stadium, making for a lackluster greeting for the team.
One would be hard pressed to find a senior on the football team (who was born 22 years after the song was released) that would actually choose that song. Judging by the collective sigh of the student section, students could care less about a song their parents can barely remember.
With the new stadium addition and the "change of culture" in the program, the fans need to match that change with their own change in the culture and give the football team the energy they deserve.
