Queens College CUNY is stalling payment for its currently working Non-Teaching Adjuncts

The Issue

Queens College CUNY has implemented a last minute and newly required approval process in order to stall the payment of it's large part-time Non-Teaching Adjunct (NTA) staff. The rapid implementation caused many appointment and reappointments of existing and new staff to get rejected.

For the 2015-2016 fiscal year, CUNY employees under the NTA designation, myself included, have been asked to continue working on good will while the payment processing is completed. We are working for free.

While employees are being told that we will eventually get reimbursed for hours worked, the delay in pay period has had a destructive effect on many of our lives.

One month into the semester, many NTA's have been forced to utilize emergency savings to counter the high cost of living in New York City. Rent, food, and bills can not be paid with good intentions.

We, the Non-Teaching Adjuncts, act as researchers, coordinators, and administrative assistants for the many programs and departments at the college.

According to the Queens College Adjunct Handbook, "Notice of reappointment (including your title and hourly rate) or non-reappointment is given by December 1 and May 1 in the fall and spring semesters, respectively." We have had our reappointment secured since May 1st. It is now the end of September and we are working with no pay.

In a 2013 email regarding the appointment of Non-Teaching Adjuncts, listed on the Queens College site, it is stated: "Payment must be timely. (For example, work performed in the academic year should be paid when it is
performed.)"

We are calling on Elizabeth Hendrey, Provost and VP of Academic Affairs, President Felix V. Matos Rodriguez, and Vice President William Keller to address this unacceptable treatment of existing and new employees.
