Jamaican infrastructure must be upgraded

Jamaican infrastructure must be upgraded
The Issue
Hurricane Melissa has left so much damage and destruction in its wake. Homes and roads have been totally washed away. Roofs torn off in the extreme winds. Telephone poles and power lines have been ripped from the ground and pose a serious safety risk to those in their vicinity. Communities are cut off by lack of cell signal from outdated telecommunication infrastructure. Organizations and first responders are unable to reach those in need due to downed trees and landslides. The Jamaican people have stepped up to help one another despite dealing with the tragic and immense loss of their homes. Too many have lost everything. To say that rebuilding will be a long and difficult process would be a gross understatement. While the donations pour in to help people rebuild their lives, we call on the government of Jamaica to do their part. Use this as an opportunity to make a lasting change and easily accomplish some goals outlined in the Vision 2030 document. Bury the power and telecommunications lines. Improve the storm drain system. Upgrade water and sewer lines now that many are exposed. Bring in water and light to those communities that never had those necessities. Rebuild the roads to last using modern and proven technology. and add in much needed pedestrian infrastructure. Let this be the last disaster that sees people cut off from the electrical grid for months of repairs to an outdated system. Let us modernize now while we have the chance. And finally, let us put new rules and regulations in place regarding construction to handle these powerful storms, and enforce them. Let us take advantage of the destruction and build back better. Hurricane season isn't over yet. Let the work start now before the next storm undos the hard work of the Jamaican people.
