Jagex, please create 2007 RuneScape Preservation Servers
The Issue
In 2013, Jagex launched Old School RuneScape using the August 10th, 2007 backup they found. They promised it would take a different route than RuneScape 2 took, avoiding updates like the Removal of Wildy and Free Trade, and the Evolution of Combat. Every update would have to be polled to the players first. After over 13 years of updates, it has evolved into its own successful and unique game. However, this also means that one of the most iconic eras in RuneScape's history can no longer be experienced as it originally existed.
I'm asking Jagex to consider launching official 2007 Preservation Servers based on the August 10th, 2007 backup that was used to create OSRS. Unlike OSRS, the servers would receive no new content, polls, or quality of life updates. Their purpose would be to preserve a snapshot of RuneScape history, in the same way their RuneScape Classic servers once did.
These servers would:
- Allow players to freely experience an authentic 2007 version of RuneScape whenever they choose.
- Preserve an important piece of gaming history for future generations.
- Generate excitement that attracts returning and new players, many of whom may then become long term OSRS players.
- Inspire a new wave of YouTube videos, streaming content, and community events that further promote Old School RuneScape.
These servers would exist for preservation. They would remain permanently frozen in time, aside from essential bug fixes, integrity patches, and moderation. This isn't about replacing OSRS or splitting up the community, and OSRS should continue evolving exactly as it has been. Preservation Servers would simply exist alongside it as an optional historical experience.
Jagex has already demonstrated that the August 2007 build still exists and is playable, including plans to showcase it at RuneFest 2026. With modern moderation tools and infrastructure, official Preservation Servers are more feasible today than preserving RSC was years ago.
