Create "Pollytown Memorial Interchange"

The Issue

Recently, human remains of multiple people were located at the I-95/I-295 construction site in Jacksonville, Florida. A great number of JSO and COJ officials became involved in the attempt to identify the remains and determine their origins. It is now known that the remains are from a 1940s era burial site for the Pollytown community in Jacksonville. "Pollytown was formed after the Civil War and it was an all-black community and now it’s mixed. But the old neighborhood is still there, same boundaries. According to the WPA document, the cemetery was not fenced and over the decades, people must have lost track of it."

To preserve the history of Pollytown and honor those who were interred there, this petition seeks to appeal to the Mayor and City Council to nicely and appropriately landscape the new I-95/I-295 interchange, to name the area "Pollytown Memorial Interchange" and to place a historical marker at the location where the remains were found.
