The Issue
As Wyoming begins to re-open, President Trump and Governor Gordon have urged everyone to wear a mask in public. Please do it.
Wyoming is entering the next phase of our response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Businesses are beginning to re-open. Restrictions are loosening. This will help our economy and workforce. That is a good thing. But we must remain vigilant.
The Governor has amended several state orders so that our economy can begin the recovery process. Teton County has also amended its public health orders. The Governor is rightly emphasizing public health and data as critical factors in how Wyoming progresses through the re-opening.
As we begin to re-open our local economy, Teton County still faces challenges and pressures unlike any other county in Wyoming. Teton County's per capita COVID-19 case rate remains the highest in the state, by far. We are 7x higher than Natrona County (Casper), 3x higher than Laramie County (Cheyenne), and more than 2x higher than Fremont County, which has experienced a major spike in cases of late. As such, we cannot let down our guard as we re-open or we will take two steps back for every step forward.
Congratulations to the residents of Teton County for flattening our curve. And a special thank you to all of our health care workers, first responders, and District Public Health Officer Dr. Travis Riddell and Public Health Director Jodie Pond. Well done by all.
In less than 8 weeks, Teton County has gone from zero cases to the 97 cases we have today, May 2, and 20% of our cases have been hospitalized. At least six Teton County COVID-19 patients have been transferred to hospitals in Utah and Idaho, and several were on ventilators. Sadly, one of our neighbors has died.
Due to a shortage of testing, the true number of COVID-19 cases in Teton County is surely much higher. Dr. Riddell says the confirmed cases are "just the tip of the iceberg," and there are many more cases we don't know about.
As we move forward, please continue to follow Teton County public health orders, follow social distancing guidelines in businesses and the workplace, and wear a mask when around others.
