The serenity and original neighbourhood feel of Alta Vista and the environment of Alta Lake are under increasing threat due to the Commercial Enterprise that capitalizes off the demise of our sensitive water ways.

This summer in particular the Resort Municipality of Whistler encouraged tourist traffic through our Alta Vista neighbourhood in the pursuit of commercial activities  Tourists were crammed into our small Lakeside Park in record numbers to rent canoes and kayaks. There was no social distancing, no masks or other precautions. There was the increase in toilet facilities through the installation of temporary port-a-pottys to accommodate the excess volume of tourist traffic. The overcrowded dock was littered with canoes and kayaks scattered between sunbathers and then lifted around them to launch the patrons.

This new problem compounds a 20 year history which has threatened The Spotted Frog, Rainbow Trout, Kokanee Salmon spawning beds and the natural wonder and environment of our beloved River of Golden Dreams.

Problems with water quality, swimmers itch, and noise have increased over the years as the Commercial Enterprise has grown out of control. Gas power boats to rescue patrons of the enterprise who are unable to paddle back against the well known strong wind and current on Alta Lake are creating an increasing nuisance and concern for anyone who resides nearby without mention of the Spotted Frogs.

The commercial enterprise which is put to tender every 4 years by The Resort Municipality of Whistler is unnecessary and now in breach of zoning by-laws. It has taken its toll on the wildlife and is now attracting Covid 19 risk. Thus putting our residential neighbourhood of Alta Vista at a grave health risk.

The Official Master Plan of 1993 provided for all species and persons involved to ensure our neighbourhoods would be preserved in peace and access would be limited. Now, under the direction of Mayor Jack Crompton and The Resort Municipality of Whistler, "The Official Master Plan" has been altered to the "adopted" Official Master Plan of June 2020. The revised plan represents a complete contradiction of the original Official Community Plan of 1993 which limits access to preserve residential neighbourhoods, the species which reside here, and the environment and natural beauty of our home.

The following is an excerpt from the revised Official Community Plan;

4.7.2 The Municipality will, where possible:

- maximize public access to important lakes and creeks;

- acquire waterfront properties and crown lands for development for local and public parks purposes;

- continue to develop a comprehensive network of trails which link provincial and Municipal parks, beach areas, the alpine environment, and recreation areas outside of the Municipal boundaries; and

- continue to develop a network of bicycle paths.

With this mandate in place your waterfront home could be expropriated by the Municipality to make way for more Commercial Enterprise.

The sensitive size of our community lakes cannot absorb the increased volume of destination tourist traffic.

Alta Lake is at the top of our water shed and can potentially contaminate all water systems flowing out of Whistler.

Join me to petition the Resort Municipality of Whistler to ban Commercial Enterprise on Alta Lake. Please sign this petition to do your part to help block this continued expansion of Commercial Enterprise on Alta Lake which as with all our lakes needs to be protected.
