Petition updateMake English an Official Language of New ZealandWhen did you last hear the word "family" said on TV?

The acceleration of the process of mixing language and replacing common English words with Maori words continues unabated. "Family" has now been totally replaced on TV and in newspapers by "Whanau" meaning extended family. It is an easy word to use and the concept is widely understood.

As per my last post,  NZ is becoming a research case for rapid adoption of  Maori words into common vernacular which will eventually lead to a pidgin language form in this country, given time. The ironic thing is that many so called Maori words are just transliterations of English with a new pronunciation and spelling to express many new concepts due to the limited number of Maori words in the original language.

You must be aware of the appalling fall in the standards of English literacy in the country in a recent  international survey. In the present push to force Te Reo on everyone, even basic understanding of English is falling.

Most countries ensure their young people study more then one language and gain competence in both or more languages. They do not attempt to mix languages.

We must get English recognised as an official language to take its place in NZ as the number one language of international communication, and ensure our children have competency in the use of English at all levels, as well as in Maori if this is the desire of parents or the majority of the population.
