We have all heard that the literacy levels in English of young New Zealanders have dropped to al all time low, yet we are being forced to understand the new Minglish (Maori-English) which is pentrating every level of government and public service.
A large number of our young people already come from homes in which English is not the home language. The frequency with which Maori words are now liberally being sprinkled in English sentences, is compounding the difficulties of mastering correct English for all.
Do we want a population literate in English and able to communicate with the outside world, or do we want to see an increasing use of mixed language sentences added to the already prevalent circumlocutions in "new" Maori to translate , or frequently replace, relatively simple English titles of government departments, educational institutions and so on?
If you believe English should have the status of an official language in this country, then please get your friends and relatives to sign this petition.
