In 2012, New Zealanders spent approximately $60.4 million on bottled water, however only 30% of the bottles were recycled. New Zealand households throw out approximately 1.7 billion plastic containers in their recycling and rubbish bins. It has been found that around 97 million plastic bottles are placed incorrectly into rubbish bins rather than recycling bins in New Zealand. This contributes to the plastic waste that is found in the ocean and is threatening the lives of many sea animals.

We are bringing this to your attention because of three significant reasons:

  1. It is clear that New Zealanders face confusion surrounding recycling and are unable to correctly recycle their plastics.
  2. New Zealand is producing too many single-use plastic bottles. We found that drink manufacturers make and sell around an estimated one billion single-use plastic bottles each year in New Zealand.
  3. Plastic bottles are predicted to take at least 450 years to completely disintegrate which will greatly add to the pollution in the ocean.

By banning unnecessary single-use plastic bottles in New Zealand it will lead to New Zealand being more environmentally friendly and will save and protect sea life. By taking this action, New Zealand will lead other countries around the world in becoming a cleaner and greener world. Banning single-use plastic bottles will eliminate confusion surrounding recycling.

In New Zealand, the government has already made positive changes to reduce plastic. On the 1st of July 2019, single-use plastic shopping bags were banned in New Zealand. The law around this states that bags made up of plastic up to 70 microns in thickness are banned. Lightweight plastic bags found at the supermarket, takeaway food shops and other clothing or retail stores are banned. These are all good building blocks and the government is to be congratulated in making these changes.

The next steps in banning plastic involve the banning of unnecessary single-use plastic bottles in New Zealand and therefore fall under the responsibility of the Minister of Environment.
