It’s Time to Modernize: Call for a $200 Canadian Banknote
It’s Time to Modernize: Call for a $200 Canadian Banknote
The Issue
Canada’s currency has not kept pace with the economic reality of the past few years. The $100 bill was once a significant store of value, but decades of inflation have turned it into "grocery money." For small businesses, contractors, and Canadians who prefer the privacy and reliability of cash, the lack of a higher denomination creates unnecessary friction and inefficiency.
Why We Need a $200 Bill:
- Reflecting Reality: Our currency denominations should reflect the prices Canadians actually pay.
- Efficiency: Handling large stacks of $50s and $100s for rent, used vehicle purchases, or contractor payments is cumbersome and unsafe. A $200 note reduces the physical volume of cash needed for legitimate commerce.
- Global Standard: The European Union successfully uses the €200 note. Switzerland uses a 200 and even a 1,000 franc note. Canada is falling behind by forcing citizens to use lower-value notes for high-value times.
Our Stand Against Crime:
Critics argue high-value notes aid crime. We argue that law-abiding citizens should not be inconvenienced due to the actions of a few. Modern polymer notes with advanced security features can prevent counterfeiting, and existing financial tracking laws are sufficient to stop laundering without eliminating physical cash options.
The Ask:
We urge the Government of Canada to acknowledge that cash remains a vital public utility. We call for the immediate introduction of a $200 banknote to restore convenience and practicality to the Canadian economy.
Sign below to support the modernization of Canada’s currency.
