It's time for fair and effective treatment for all.
The Issue
I have been living with Type 1 diabetes since the tender age of 10—a relentless autoimmune disease that, despite years of hopes and research, remains incurable. Now, 38 years later, I find myself battling not just diabetes but also insulin resistance. The necessary increase in insulin over time has resulting in it storing as fat, as insulin is a growth hormone. Despite eating the same as any regular person, my weight had been increasing, and so had my health concerns.
Amidst this personal health battle, a breakthrough came in the form of GLP-1 receptor agonists (commonly known as GLP-1s). I decided to pay for these out of my own pocket, and the results were nothing short of miraculous. Within just six months, my insulin requirement dropped by two-thirds, and I lost 3.5 stone merely due to taking less insulin—not through starving or dramatic lifestyle changes. Most importantly, my HbA1c level pegged beautifully at 42—the level of someone without diabetes!
This personal experience illustrates the transformative potential GLP-1s hold for Type 1 diabetics who are fighting both insulin resistance and consequential obesity. Tragically, this effective medication remains inaccessible to many due to its prohibitive cost, as it is not funded by the NHS for such usage.
We propose that the NHS include GLP-1 receptor agonists in their prescription offerings, free of charge, to Type 1 diabetics struggling with insulin resistance and obesity. Such a move would not only stabilize glucose levels and reduce the need for excessive insulin injections but also unveil a viable path away from the additional health risks of obesity.
Financially, though funding free GLP-1 prescriptions might seem costly upfront, it has the potential to reduce long-term healthcare expenses significantly by decreasing complications related to diabetes and obesity, which are financially and physically debilitating.
The time is ripe to urge the NHS to expand their understanding and allocation of resources toward those pioneering real-world solutions, like GLP-1 receptor agonists, in managing Type 1 diabetes comprehensively. Please sign this petition to enable access to life-altering medication for those who need it the most.
