Cheshire residents deserve an independent, fair, and transparent process for enforcing our town’s ethics code.

Right now, Cheshire has strong, codified ethics rules, but no independent body to receive or review ethics complaints. Instead, those responsibilities fall to the Town Council, a group of elected officials who may themselves be the subject of a complaint. This structure can create -- in appearance or reality -- conflicts of interest. It erodes confidence in local government.

We, the undersigned residents of Cheshire, call on the Town Council to create a nonpartisan Ethics Commission made up of qualified residents who are not currently serving in elected or appointed office or who are not employed by the town.

This commission should:
    •    Receive and review ethics complaints;
    •    Conduct fair, transparent hearings; and
    •    Issue findings and recommendations based on Cheshire’s existing ethics code.

Good government starts with good, transparent processes. A truly independent commission will protect both public officials and citizens, strengthen accountability, and reaffirm our shared commitment to integrity in local government. 

Let’s ensure that Cheshire’s ethics process is fair, impartial, and beyond politics.
