Queenslanders, it's time. It really is. On the back of legislation now passed in Victoria, WA and Tasmania (and hopefully soon South Australia), we cannot and should not have to put up with any further delays.
Qld kicked off its push for VAD legislation back in 2018. The End of Life Choices Inquiry happened in 2019. Findings/Recommendations came in early 2020. It was flicked to the Qld Law Reform Commission mid 2020. The Premier promised to "fast-track" VAD if she was re-elected. The Qld Law Reform Commission asked for a further extension of time until 10 May to deliver "draft legislation" but have indicated that subject to their limited resources, they may need to request further time.
This draft legislation will then have to go back to another Parliamentary Committee and then undergo another round of public consultation. Many of us have already sent in our submissions to the original inquiry and then to the Qld Law Reform Commission!! The debate is "supposed to" hit Parliament later in the year for debate/voting by politicians. Any further delays in the delivery of the legislation will mean VAD is a long time away. There is no excuse. It will already be 2022/2023 before this happens if the time frames are adhered to.
