The Issue

Dear Councilwoman Hutt,

On behalf of 489 students and families at ISANA Nascent Academy and the Jefferson Park community, we would like to address a pressing concern regarding speeding along Jefferson Blvd., particularly between Crenshaw Blvd. and 12th Avenue. This stretch of road poses a daily threat to our students (24% Black or African American, 72% Hispanic, and 4% identifying as two or more races or unspecified) and community members who use these streets. We are aware of the numerous accidents reported regularly in the area, and with narrow streets and speeding vehicles, crossing these roads has become increasingly hazardous for pedestrians.

ISANA Nascent Academy, serving students from Transitional Kindergarten through 8th grade, has been a proud member of the Jefferson Park community since 2005. Our diverse student body includes families on both sides of Jefferson Blvd., with many crossing this busy street daily to attend school. Unfortunately, the intersection at Jefferson Blvd. presents serious safety hazards, as families frequently navigate heavy traffic and challenging road conditions while crossing unsafely.

We respectfully request your support in improving the safety of our community, families, and students by implementing the following measures:

  1. Crosswalk with Flashing Lights: We propose installing a crosswalk with flashing lights to ensure safer pedestrian crossings. These lights would alert drivers to slow down and stay alert, especially during peak school hours.
  2. Concrete Bollards: To further enhance safety, we recommend installing concrete bollards at key locations, specifically at the intersections of Norton Avenue and Jefferson Blvd. and Bronson Avenue and Jefferson Blvd. These bollards would act as protective barriers, reducing the risk of accidents involving pedestrians or the school building and offering added security for families walking their children to school.

The safety of our students and families is our top priority, and these measures will significantly enhance the protection of our community. Although we have been fortunate to avoid serious accidents, the risk remains a constant concern. By implementing these safety improvements, we can prevent potential hazards and ensure the well-being of our students and community members.
