We call upon the Irish Government to ban the herbicide 'Roundup' weedkiller NOW

The Issue

IRISH CITIZENS

Millions of Irish citizens are routinely exposed to dangerous levels of a herbicide mixture containing glyphosate, 'RoundUp' weed killer daily, through their schools, parks, gardens, farmland etc. Glyphosate is the MOST widely used and sprayed herbicide in history causing serious harm to life

Glyphosate has contaminated our planet and is now found in our children's urine, our bloodstreams, our crops, our foods, (wheat being the most contaminated), and as this recent article show’s it’s now seeping into our water system, rivers and streams, so we are drinking, cooking and bathing in glyphosate too; (Mayo’s water - May 2019)

In the year 2015, International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), an agency of the World Health Organization, had found in its research that 'Glyphosate', which is an active ingredient in Monsanto’s RoundUp, is “probably” carcinogenic and carries an increased risks for non-Hodgkin lymphoma as well as DNA and chromosomal damage.

IARC also concluded that there was “strong” evidence for genotoxicity, both for “pure” glyphosate and for glyphosate mixtures. IARC reviewed about 1000 studies. Some of the studies looked at people exposed through their jobs, such as farmers. Others were experimental studies on cancer and cancer related effects in experimental systems.

Other glyphosate/herbicide studies have linked the chemical to a number of health issues, including, but not limited to ADHD, Alzheimer’s Disease, Autism, Birth Defects, various forms of cancer, Celiac Disease, Colitis, Heart Disease, Inflammatory Bowel Syndrome, Kidney Disease, Liver Disease, and Parkinson’s Disease.

Following the IARC report in 2015, many countries, Argentina, Brazil, Sri Lanka and the Six Gulf States (Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman) Malta have banned glyphosate. Many others are in the process of doing so. France has banned glyphosate in public parks immediately and will phase out the use of glyphosate herbicides in agriculture and landscaping use over the next 5 years completely. Please see full list

In October 2017 over 1 million Europeans requested a ban, 72% of the members of the European Parliament voted to ban glyphosate and despite concerns, after two years of arguments the European commission in 2017 granted and extension to glyphosate’s license for use in member states up to 2022

Ireland backed the extension after farmers warned that agriculture would suffer without glyphosate. The farmer is not aware of the health hazards associated with the use of herbicides as manufacturing companies intentionally hide the health hazards associated with them. I’d also like to add here organic growers USE natural alternatives to herbicides and its in all our interest to discover them, promote them, encourage them and use them.

In January of 2019, a European Parliament report found that EU regulators based their decision to relicense glyphosate on an assessment that was plagiarized from a coalition of pesticide companies, including Monsanto.

The EU Parliament report investigated claims that Germany’s Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) copied and pasted large sections of a pesticide industry assessment of glyphosate literature in its own assessment.

Following the release of the EU Parliament report, an EU court ruled that EFSA should publicize glyphosate studies used for its assessments. AFP reported that the General Court had annulled decisions by the EU food watch agency “refusing access to the toxicity and carcinogenicity studies on the active substance glyphosate,” the court said in a statement.

On May 14, 2019, a jury from Auckland, USA, ordered Bayer-Monsanto to pay $ 2 billion to a couple who had suffered from cancer after using herbicide called 'RoundUp'.  This is the third case of such damages on the company. Two months ago, the State’s court of Alameda County had ordered the company to pay a compensation of $80 million dollars to a Californian man.  Similarly, in another lawsuit, the State court of San Francisco had ordered compensation by the same company for a school’s groundskeeper to the tune of $200 million, which was later reduced by another court to $78 million.

According to Baum Hedlund Aristei and Goldman a US law firm representing thousands of plaintiffs suing Monsanto for allegedly causing their cancer, there are currently a few thousands such cases pending in different courts throughout the USA and just recently Australia.

The Department of Justice is investigating Monsanto for corruption, cover-ups, and collusion with the EPA in relation to the carcinogenic effects of glyphosate.

Whereas the people around the world are reeling under the risk and suffering due to glyphosate, the makers of the herbicide weed killers with Glyphosate as main ingredient are not ready to accept the fact. Despite being convicted by the court every time, they continue with legal appeals due to their strong financial muscles. The reason for this is that all their business hinges on these weed killers and herbicide tolerant GM crops.  It is worth noting that most GM seeds are herbicide tolerant (HT).

It is not difficult to understand that everything ending in ……cide is toxic to life and all life is interconnected.

At a time when the world is crying out to reduce damage to our planet, why is the Irish government permitting this cancer causing (WHO) carcinogenic to be sprayed on the foods we eat, the land we live, the water we drink. The consequence of this herbicide is going to be so huge, what are we waiting for? Our land which was once lush green is now stripped and awash with the stuff and turned a horrid deathly brown, now more than ever. Meanwhile, our children are now sitting under trees, swimming in lakes and drinking the stuff etc, etc, etc!

LETS STOP THIS NOW

We call upon Irelands Government and the Department of Agriculture Food & Marine to ban the use of the herbicide 'Monsanto's RoundUp' weedkiller with immediate affect.

Please join me and others in calling for a complete ban by signing this petition.

Thank you
