Another GAA club has organised a fundraiser at a greyhound track where dogs suffer and die.
Blarney GAA hurling and football club has announced a “Night at the Dogs” fundraiser at Curraheen Park track and is “asking all our members to please sell entry tickets to the race night”.
The club is aiming to shift 2,500 tickets, including 1,000 to underage / Club na nOg players.
Despite the suffering and deaths of dogs and the fact that greyhound racing is a gambling activity, GAA Head Office has refused to step in to stop these fundraisers.
In an appeal to Blarney GAA Club, we highlighted that Curraheen Park is one of the worst tracks in the country for injuries and deaths. 215 greyhounds suffered injuries there and 83 died or were killed by a track vet over the past 10 years alone, sickening Greyhound Racing Ireland statistics show. This includes 15 injuries and 5 deaths in 2023 and 10 injuries and 3 deaths in the first six months of 2024.
At races around Ireland in the past ten years, at least 3,485 greyhounds suffered injuries and 1,290 died or were killed.
We encouraged Blarney GAA to watch RTE’s “Greyhounds Running for Their Lives” documentary which exposed the horrors of greyhound racing, including the behind-the-scenes killing every year of an estimated 6,000 greyhounds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYTb2qBjlMM
