An Irish greyhound “in horrific condition with a broken tail” has been been rescued from a dog pound in England.

In a disturbing Facebook post, Kerry Hill of Greyhound Protection UK revealed that the 2-year-old dog “is actually a coursing greyhound who is called Ballymeelisheuro” and is “still registered to an Irish syndicate”.

The greyhound, now renamed Lincoln, “was in a UK pound on death row and would have been put to sleep [there] if he didn’t get rescue space”.

“So how has this lad ended up in a UK pound while still registering and standing in Ireland?” Kerry asked in her post. “No doubt it will be changed to ‘homed’ or ‘exported’. Again, just another greyhound disregarded by an industry. Racing and coursing are both as bad as each other. They don’t care for the dogs, it’s all about [the money].”

She went on to list some of the many dogs who have been dumped and rescued - all still registered to the racing industry.

These include Sweep who was “dumped in a pound at 10 years old in horrific condition and died 6 weeks after he came to us of a massive seizure” and Pippa “whose ear tattoos had been chemically removed and her leg was so badly broken it had to be amputated”.

In August, Greyhound Protection UK outlined the case of another unfortunate Irish greyhound who was rescued by the group last New Year’s Eve after ending up in Spain. The skinny greyhound was suffering with a broken leg and “the most horrific skin injury”.

The owner claimed that “he thought Spain was a good place to send greyhounds”, despite it being common knowledge that greyhounds and other sighthounds used in Spain are mercilessly thrown down wells and hung from trees at the end of the hunting season.

When found, this greyhound “had a broken leg, was horrifically skinny and had the most horrific skin injury on his leg that’s taken 7 long months to get better.”

Greyhound Protection UK points out that the dog “was still registered in Ireland when we found him [in Spain]”, adding that although “his owner was apparently extremely upset by the state of him, not one single pound was offered towards his vet care which had cost hundreds.”

After seven months recovering in foster care, Winter was relocated to a new home in the UK.

ACTION ALERT

Please join us in urging the government to STOP the massive grants that are propping up greyhound racing, an activity which provides major cash injections into cruel hare coursing. Registration fees for greyhounds used at tracks are paid to the Irish Coursing Club, an income stream that is helping to keep this shameful activity afloat.

Since 2001, Greyhound Racing Ireland has received €347 million in funding, including €17.6 million for 2022, €18.2 million for 2023 and €19 million for 2024. €19.82 million more has been shamefully allocated in Budget 2025. This is unacceptable and must be stopped.

Tell the leaders of Fianna Fail, Fine Gael, the Green Party and Sinn Fein to stop supporting this funding.
