Social Democrats co-leader Catherine Murphy TD (Kildare North) has again challenged the government's massive grants to cruel greyhound racing.
Referring to a recently published Indecon economic report which she said “really paints a terrible stark picture of the sector”, she questioned the funding it is continuing to receive.
“It has received €16.8 million from the government this year and in the region of €14.7 million has already been drawn down this year,” she stated in her 11 June Dail Eireann speech. “That report is going to be something that will have to be looked at. It is the most supported sport in the country [in terms of funding it receives from the government]. When you start looking at the other sports that require attention, you’d really have to question that.”
A RED C opinion poll conducted in September showed that a two thirds majority want the government to stop the state grants that are propping up the nasty, dog-killing activity.
Petitions urging the Irish Government to stop funding greyhound racing have now been signed more than 400,000 times.
