Cork's Curraheen Park greyhound track recorded a massive operating loss of €229,248 in 2018, the Irish Examiner has reported this week.
The newspaper highlights that the track also saw a fall in the number of races and race meetings, while the "overall turnover at the stadium decreased by 19% to €559,874, with gate receipts down 25% to €280,755".
Also down was the total prize money - €695,000, compared to €734,00 in 2017.

Curraheen Park is one of the worst tracks in Ireland for injuries and deaths. 120 greyhounds suffered injuries there and 44 were killed by a track vet over the past five years alone, sickening Irish Greyhound Board statistics show. Among the victims at Curraheen Park was a dog who died of a “suspected heart attack” on 29th June 2018.

Since 2001, greyhound racing has received more than a quarter of a billion euros of taxpayers' money, including another €16.8 million for 2020. Please contact Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe and demand an end to state funding to greyhound racing and horse racing. Tell them to redirect the funds to the many deserving charities crying out for funding.
