“We object to the idea that we are going to pass, without debate in the House, the handing over of €17 million to the greyhound industry,” Deputy Murphy stated in the Dail. “It is utterly scandalous, especially considering we normally have a debate but also because it’s in a year that saw the ‘RTÉ Investigates’ documentary talking about 6,000 dogs a year being killed. The doping…”
He noted that there have been debates ahead of the vote in previous years, saying “we need a debate here - those who support giving €17 million as opposed to [giving it to] disability organisations that are falling, as opposed to building over 80 houses. We should have a debate in this house.”
Deputy Murphy (RISE, Dublin South-West), who is part of the Solidarity - People Before Profit alliance, was among 30 TDs who admirably voted against the funding.
Sadly, 83 TDs (mostly Fine Gael, Fianna Fail and Labour Party) shamefully disregarded all the recent revelations about cruelty and killing and voted in favour of the funding, thus ensuring that it was approved. They voted for the funding despite being made aware of the fact that recent opinion polls confirm that a majority want the massive grants stopped.
