Petition updateIrish Government: Stop Giving Millions of Euro to Cruel Greyhound RacingHow many greyhounds are buried at Shelbourne Park stadium?

How many greyhounds are buried at Dublin’s Shelbourne Park stadium? That’s the question recently put to the Minister for Agriculture, Michael Creed by Maureen O’Sullivan TD.

The query was made after the Irish Council Against Blood Sports received information suggesting that, in the past, greyhounds killed at Shelbourne Park were buried in a plot at the side of the stadium.

In her question to Minister Creed, Deputy O’Sullivan (Dublin Central, Independent) enquired about “the number of greyhounds buried in the grounds of Shelbourne Park Greyhound Stadium; if this practice was approved by the Irish Greyhound Board; if dogs continue to be buried there; and the procedure for incidents involving dogs that die at Shelbourne Park Greyhound Stadium and other IGB tracks.”

In response, Minister Michael Creed (Cork North West, Fine Gael) did not deny that greyhounds are buried at Shelbourne Park but rather that the Irish Greyhound Board “has no knowledge” of it.

“Bord na gCon has informed me that it has no knowledge of greyhounds buried on the grounds of Shelbourne Park Greyhound Stadium,” Minister Creed stated. “The bodies of greyhounds that pass away or are euthanised at all Bord na gCon licensed stadia are collected and disposed of by incineration. This practice is done by persons authorised under the EU (Animal –By-Products) Regulations 2014 in accordance with Article 12 of the European Parliament and Council Regulations No 1069/2009.”

He added that when sudden deaths of greyhounds occur, a vet “decides whether a detailed post-mortem examination is required” and if so, organ/tissue samples are submitted to a veterinary laboratory for further investigation. Shelbourne Park is one of Ireland’s worst tracks for injuries and deaths. At least 167 greyhounds suffered injuries and 39 were killed by a track vet at Shelbourne Park over the past five years alone, sickening Irish Greyhound Board statistics show. Among the victims was a greyhound who broke a leg at the first bend recently and was carried away bleeding with a bone "popped out". He was later killed. In August, another greyhound suffered a heart attack and died.
