Irish Government Grant Data Access to British Irish Whistleblower in Geneva, Switzerland
The Issue
For nearly 13 years, an Irish whistleblower living in Switzerland has been subjected to alleged criminal retribution, intimidation, and the non-enforcement of court orders. Instead of receiving protection and support, vital evidence has been suppressed in at least Switzerland, the UK and Ireland.
In Ireland, the DFA (Department for Foreign Affairs), Garda Síochána and the Irish Prison Service apparently continue to withhold confirmed data that is essential to defending against alleged #SLAPP proceedings and further retribution. This at least violates rights guaranteed under the EU GDPR and the Irish Data Protection Act 2018. Court orders in the whistleblower’s favour have been ignored and consular assistance has not been forthcoming.
The Irish Government has long been aware of this case. In January 2019, Brendan Howlin TD raised a parliamentary question directly to then-Tánaiste Simon Coveney, highlighting concerns that the Irish whistleblower, as a victim of crime abroad, was not receiving the protection she needed. Luke Ming Flanagan MEP has also made formal representations, and the case has been referred by several other Irish MPs, yet no effective action has followed.
This is not just about one case — it is about whether Ireland protects its citizens when powerful institutions and individuals close ranks. Whistleblowers should not be punished with silence, delay, and denial of justice.
We call on the Irish Government to immediately:
- Provide consular assistance.
- Ensure that Switzerland complies with court orders.
- Order immediate release of all withheld DFA (Department for Foreign Affairs), Garda and Irish Prison Service data relating to this case.
- Disclose all MLA (Mutual Legal Assistance Agreements) that may be linked to offences against the #Ecolint whistleblower and family members.
- Guarantee protection and data disclosure for Irish whistleblowers facing retaliation at home or abroad.
Ireland must not abandon its own citizens to years of retribution and denial of justice. Transparency and accountability are the minimum owed to whistleblowers who act in the public interest, including in the best interests of the protection of children.
