A textbook to be used by pupils in Ireland’s post primary schools has an article devoted to greyhound racing in Ireland that is critical of the practice and encourages pupils to discuss the issue. This is a welcome development because it will increase awareness of what happens to dogs in this cruel industry.

Unfortunately, the greyhound industry and its influential political allies are pushing hard to have the book removed from schools, claiming the article is unfair to the “sport.”

Please ask the book company concerned, Folens, NOT to give in to pressure from the greyhound racing business and allow the article to remain in any further editions of the school textbook.

Dear Sir,

We understand that your company is coming pressure to withdraw an article in the school textbook Making a Difference that deals with the subject of greyhound racing in Ireland.

We urge you to hold firm and allow the article to remain as it is important that people of all ages, including those attending primary and second level schools, are aware of the cruel practises that are inherent in the industry and the suffering caused to thousands of greyhounds each year by owners and trainers. The dogs are doped, abandoned or killed when they are too old or under perform, and exported to Southern China where they may end up being boiled or skinned alive for the meat market

We further encourage you to include articles covering other forms of animal cruelty and exploitation as education is the key to alleviating the plight of the sentient beings that share this planet with us.

Thanking you,
