Hold those Accountable for South Iredell's Disrespectful 9/11 Ceremony

The Issue

On September 10, 2021, South Iredell High School held a ceremony to commemorate the events of 9/11.

It would appear that what should have been a solemn ceremony remembering the lives lost on that day was instead turned into political rally and a chance for Troutman's manager to push his political agenda.

What is truly disturbing is that instead of "honoring the victims and first responders of 9/11", the manager chose to lecture the students on how "their generation was a disgrace because not all of them shared his chosen political views". According to several comments from students in attendance, they were told they were "lucky they didn't have to be involved in politics today" and "if they didn't agree with his views, they should leave the country". All of these quotes aren't from the speaker but from what the students took away that morning.

Today's ceremony was deeply upsetting to many in the student body. It is clear as student's fled to social media to express their disgust. South Iredell's students are a diverse community and the characterization by the town manager of being "idiots" was extremely offensive, misguided, and vulgar.

This whole ordeal was genuinely unacceptable. We want an apology and accountability.

Principle Shoffner should apologize. If she wants to promote unity and inclusivity at South Iredell, she should not be complicit with remarks made today.

The Manager of Troutman should apologize. Apologize to the student body for co-opting a crucial time of remembrance with his political agenda. He should also apologize for his insulting and disrespectful comments directed toward those who don't share his political views. We also want his acknowledgment that it was an inappropriate time and place to discuss such topics.

Lastly, we want the Student Board's acknowledgment. We want their acknowledgement that the ceremony today was disgraceful to a delicate matter, especially as it was to recognize 9/11's twentieth anniversary. We want their acknowledgement that what transpired was not a reflection of the student population's ideals of service, innovation, honor, and success.

We, the students of South Iredell High School, recognize the sacrifices made on 9/11. We cannot ignore someone who would rather choose to benefit their own political aspirations over the memory of those who gave their lives on that day.
