Dear Fellow Iowa City Climate Advocate,
As you know, Iowa City City Council unanimously voted to REJECT a 3 MegaWatt, utility-scale solar array in Waterworks Prairie Park on April 7th. The solar array, in partnership with MidAmerican, would have had the capacity to power 580 Iowa City homes exclusively on solar energy.
The project would have been an enormous step in fulfilling actions set out in the Iowa City 100-Day Accelerated Climate Action Report, reducing local greenhouse gas emissions, and reducing our reliance on fossil fuels -- while MidAmerican paid for the entire project. City Manager, Geoff Fruin, has estimated the value of the project to be between $11 million and $12 million -- the City of Iowa City currently allocates one million dollars a year for all climate action initiatives. Iowa City simply cannot afford a solar project of this scale without this partnership.
But, all hope isn't lost. If enough fellow climate advocates in Iowa City make certain to the city council that we prioritize climate action in our city, they will be compelled to revisit the project.
If you feel passionately about climate action in our city, please:
· Write city council saying you are in support of the Waterworks Prairie Park solar project and would like it to be revisited (council@iowa-city.org) Want ideas for what to write? See THIS document.
· Share and ask your friends and neighbors to sign this petition stating you are in support of the project
· Forward this to three other people and help spread the word
Now this project wasn’t perfect. Legitimate concerns were raised. For more project information, FAQs and suggested improvements to the PV contract, see THIS DOCUMENT.
Please help us show the council that climate action and renewable energy are a priority to the people of Iowa City!
