Thousands of Canadians will be gathering in cities across the country on August 25, 2018 to mark “Rohingya Genocide Remembrance Day” in memory of the victims of atrocities against the Rohingya committed by Myanmar military forces in that country’s Rakhine state.

In Ottawa a demonstration will be taking place on Parliament Hill to call attention to the fact that a year later nothing has been done by Canada to declare what happening to the Rohingya a genocide despite declarations by human rights and genocide scholars that the Rohingya atrocities meet the definition of genocide as outlined in the UN Genocide Convention which Canada ratified in the early 1950s.

The atrocities committed by Myanmar government forces, which took place over a period of several months, came to the world’s attention beginning in late August last year when the first reports in Western media revealed the brutal nature of what the Myanmar government termed a “clearance operation” but what human rights  and genocide scholars have termed a “genocide in progress”.

The attacks by the Myanmar military against the Rohingya resulted in the mass murder of an estimated 40,000 to 50,000 Rohingya civilians (including children and babies), the widespread and systematic gang rape of over 80,000 Rohingya women and girls, the orphaning of more than 40,000 Rohingya children, the complete destruction of more than 360 Rohingya villages and the creation of more than 720,000 Rohingya refugees who are now crammed into the largest refugee camp in the world in neighbouring Bangladesh.

Events marking the first anniversary of when atrocities against the Rohingya were first reported will be taking place in the following cities across Canada.  Please join us on August 25th in solidarity with the Rohingya people.
