Dear petition supporters, It is now almost a year since the first atrocities against the Rohingya were reported to the world in August 2017. During that time Myanmar has continued to commit horrific and brutal atrocities against the Rohingya in plain sight of the international community, as more than a million Rohingya wait with little hope for a happy future in squalid refugee camps in Bangladesh. Despite the mountains of evidence that has been unearthed that Myanmar has been implementing a GENOCIDE AGENDA against the Rohingya for decades, despite the fact that noted international genocide scholars and human rights academics have said that what happened and continues to happen to the Rohingya meets the definition of GENOCIDE, neither Canada nor any other nation has fulfilled its moral and legal obligations under the UN Convention on the Prevention and Prosecution of the Crime of Genocide. WHY IS CANADA AND THE WORLD NOT ACTING TO STOP THIS ONGOING GENOCIDE??? Under the UN Genocide Convention it is the legal responsibility of all nations that are party to that treaty to declare a genocide when there is evidence that one is being planned or is taking place. That evidence has been presented and yet still Canada and the world does nothing. Why? As Canadians we can't do anything about the rest of the world but we can do something about how the Canadian government responds. In the coming weeks there will be a series of activities to highlight Canada's failings to call out a genocide leading up to events on Saturday, August 25th in cities across Canada, the US and Europe. I ask you to support and participate in these activities and events and confront your MPs and the Prime Minister if you have the opportunity about their inaction and hypocrisy on responses to the Rohingya Genocide. Since the Rohingya Genocide was revealed to the world, the Prime Minister and his MPs have made public statements and declarations on Victims of Genocide Day, Holocaust Remembrance Day, on Holocaust Memorial Day, and at the dedication of Canada's National Holocaust Monument about the devastating human costs of allowing hatred and tyranny to overcome openness, inclusion and freedom. These words ring hollow and are meaningless if they are not supported by actions when a genocide is actually taking place. So I ask you to watch for additional information in the coming weeks about activities and events, and news coverage about the work of the hundreds of advocates for this cause who have expended thousands of hours of volunteer time to pressure the government to do the right thing. I and the others across the country who are working on this issue thank you and look forward to your continued support to help the Rohingya -- a people who the leaders of Myanmar see as less than human. Sincerely, Fareed Khan Rohingya Petition Sponsor Director of Advocacy and Media Relations Rohingya Human Rights Network
